Cailin Huyck Orr
Science Education Resource Center at Carleton College Associate Director
Northfield, MN
My background is in limnology and aquatic biogeochemistry. Since 2014 I've been working with collaborators at institutions around the country to improve STEM education for undergraduate scholars, particularly in helping people who teach, bring evidence-based practices into their teaching and building networks of educators and scientists interested in improving teaching and learning.
Talk to me about:
The Science Education Resource Center: (serc.carleton.edu) the Teach the Earth education portal we support hold more than 5,000 teaching activities on topics you teach. We also help many scientists with broader impact components of research proposals and we can support curricular material development, assessment creation, program evaluation and project management.
Project EDDIE: (https://serc.carleton.edu/eddie/index.html) and using large, environmental, data sets to help undergraduate students develop quantitative reasoning skills and self-efficacy in working with data. Free and readily available, we have modular curricular materials developed by faculty member partners and focused on a range of ecological, geologic, and hydrology topics using datasets from LTER, NEON, GLEON and others. There are also supporting videos, webinars and workshops to help instructors use the EDDIE approach to best effect with students.
The Undergraduate Field Experience Research network (https://ufern.net/) and what they have been doing to connect people from multiple disciplines who teach field courses and improve student experience and outcomes. Kari O'Connell from UFERN is also at this meeting.
